10 Lessons we can learn when undergoing Medical or Annual Physical Exams.

Most of us here have undergone medical or annual physical exam at least more than once in their working careers. This activity is a requirement before any of us join a company or get cleared to go abroad to become an OFW . It is also a benefit provided by the companies to their employees to ensure their health is regularly check to ensure their wellbeing.

I probably have gone around 21 times on these Medical or Annual Physical exams in my 24 years of working experience and in my early attempts to join the workforce back in 1991.

1.      Don’t wear worn out underwear or you might reveal what is more than necessary

No underwear – w/ underwear but with loose garter

Lesson:   Sometimes you have to let go of old stuff or even clothes that are already worn out and spend some amount of money replacing them. It will cost you more in maintaining or using them in the long run.

2.      Understand what the Doctor’s feel during your medical check-up.

First bend over rectal check-up – look at it at home to see what the female doctor saw.

Lesson:   Part of growing up and becoming better person is understanding what other people feels and think on a given conflict or issue.  Think of how you will feel when you are on their shoes or the one looking at your behind during those physical exams.

3.      If you don’t have a Stool sample container, by all means find a way to grab one.

Guy with no Stool Sample Container – brings one on a big Lady’s Choice sandwich spread jar.

Lesson:  Not all resources in Life is available to us in order to achieve our goals and objectives. With grit and determination we can fill in those lacking resources and make us unstoppable in whatever we want to achieve in life. Countless of personalities have shown this  … Pacquaio, Jordan , Gokongwei ,  like that guy w/o that jar we too can still provide that stool sample needed.

4.      Don’t let the Doctor take a call while doing your Rectal Exam.

Friend on rectal exam – Doctor takes call – another person comes in the room

Lesson:  Multitasking is good but nothing beats a serial activity with a lot of focus and concentration put into it.  Worklife balance or juggling your different roles are critical to make sure nobody or less surprising events comes into your life with your pants down.

5.      Clean your ear canals or ask the doctor to speak clearly or you might not do what he/she asks you to do.

Hawak sa pisngi
Ubo instead of upo

Lesson:  Communication is very important in having your point or message come across. It helps to speed up resolving issues and preventing any misunderstanding.

6.      Make those bladder almost full and learn how to hold it for a little while.

75% full before doing the Prostate Ultrasound – drink more water – then run to the CR

Lesson:  Learn to delay gratification.  Not being able to wait will lead you to having the best thing or you’ll end up only with the next best thing. Like growing your wealth … you can spend it all now or be a problem to your kids later in life because you were not able to prepare anything for your retirement age.

7.       Check if you have two balls in the sack.

Check if you have undescended balls or hernia … 2 balls are better than one.

Lesson:  Self- awareness and examination. Take stock of what you have and be grateful of what you already enjoy which still might be a dream for other people.

8.      Be nice to the anesthesiologist and the nurses.

Inject anesthesia – look at their beautiful faces – woke up it is done.

Lesson:  Respect all people especially those who have nothing to lose. Anytime in your life you can be at their mercy.

9.      If they can’t locate the vein on your left arm, allow them to check it on your right arm.

Difficult to locate for blood test sample. …switch arm …switch phlebotomist

Lesson:  Have several options and be patient with people. Allow failures to happen. Allow those ideas to percolate and have perseverance to see them through into fruition… eventually you’ll find those veins and have a successful sample blood extraction.

10.  Do not memorize the Letters on the Eye Chart

Looking at different levels or grade … said Print by …

Lesson:  Do not pretend you know everything. Ask for help. Don’t be a cheat . If you don’t sooner or later people will find out or on a higher level ,

What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?   NIV Mathew 16:26

Still have more of these lessons we can derive when undergoing Medical or Annual Physical Exams. Learn to laugh at yourself whenever some of those slip ups do happen. Make sure to follow the Doctors advice whatever the results will be.  Be thankful to be alive and look forward to your next medical and Physical exam.

God Bless Us all. Thank You.

Lance Miguel's Challenge Speech

Lance delivered this speech masterfully last April 2, 2016 at SLCS.

To our guest of honor, to our Principal Teacher Ritchie, to our school officials, distinguished guests, dedicated teachers, beloved parents and fellow graduates, a pleasant afternoon to all!

We are all gathered here today to recognize the efforts, sacrifices, and all the hard work we made this school year. The wonderful and challenging times we spent here in SLCS will always be cherished even when we are already outside the walls of this great institution.

There have been several speeches delivered during graduation by the class valedictorians and the salutatorians. Mostly they talk about being successful in life and the bright future of each student. It is a challenge for me to share something more meaningful and inspiring that will be useful to us all.

We all want to win, right? We all want to have perfect scores in our exams. Make the right answers on Quiz Bee questions. On anything that we do, we always want to come on top. We don’t want to lose. Losing is equated to being a failure, who wants to be called a failure or a loser. Nobody. But here lies the problem, we don’t always have the right answers, we are not always the brightest, the strongest on a particular subject or area… losing, making mistakes, or failing is surely inevitable.

Are we going to play it safe? Or are we not going to try at all? Don’t make challenging goals for ourselves. Lower our expectations so we will not get hurt should we not receive the recognition we think we duly deserve. My answer to this is definitely NO. We should put higher expectations of ourselves and be not afraid to make mistakes. A lot of famous people did not get to where they are without failures and mistakes.

There are 3 things we can learn from famous people who encountered failures and made mistakes before becoming successful on their field:

1.   There will be times when you fail.

Sometimes physical handicap or lack of abilities cause us to fail. Sometimes it is lack of preparation or maybe even overconfidence. Regardless of the reason, we all at times fail and encounter disappointment and setbacks in life.

2.   Mistakes must Not be avoided.

A lot of people avoid making mistakes since they feel it is a sign of failure or weakness.

But mistakes can become learning experience. Fear of making mistakes has kept many people from rising to the top. If Michael Jordan who is considered one of the best basketball player of all time, stopped pursuing his love of basketball when he did not see his name on the list, if he did not try to improve his performance while he is not yet meeting the height requirement, then we would have not known of his genius and eventual greatness in the game of basketball.

3.   Embrace change.

Only thru change can there be true growth. But why do people resist change? Change is uncomfortable, consumes a lot of energy, and people fear negative impact of doing those changes. Winners and successful people did not become who they are when they are finally recognized. They became what they are when they acknowledged their mistakes and weaknesses and embraced the need to change. To improve once performance and change their attitude that is when people started to grow. We grow only when we change.

So again what do we need to learn from our mistakes and overcome failures:

1. There will be times when you fail.
2. Mistakes must not be avoided.
3. Embrace Change

Thanks to all my teachers and classmates for helping me in correcting the mistakes I committed and being part of my journey. Without you guys, I wouldn’t be here this evening speaking to everyone. To my friends, my batchmates, and classmates, thank you for everything. Congratulations to all of usl!

Next school year will bring us to another stage in our lives, I challenge you all to always keep dreaming big and don’t fear committing mistakes. Take the learnings graciously given us here at SLCS, I am confident that someday we’ll be the leaders in our society and good Christian people of the future.

Firstly I would like to thank God, for all the talents and blessings he bestowed on me, for all what I have comes from Him. I return all the glory to God for my achievements. I also would like to thank my parents, Mommy and Daddy for being my biggest supporters and inspiration in my life. My Ate Che and Kuya Tristan who came before me here at SLCS and helped paved the way for me to adapt and meet school requirements with their help and advices. To my Tita Phoebe who always push and encourage me to be my best at school.

Thank you and once again, good afternoon!

A Teacher for All Seasons

(from the net )
A teacher is like Spring,
Who nurtures new green sprouts,
Encourages and leads them,
Whenever they have doubts.

A teacher is like Summer,
Whose sunny temperament
Makes studying a pleasure,
Preventing discontent.

A teacher is like Fall,
With methods crisp and clear,
Lessons of bright colors
And a happy atmosphere.

A teacher is like Winter,
While it's snowing hard outside,
Keeping students comfortable,
As a warm and helpful guide.

Teacher, you do all these things,
With a pleasant attitude;
You're a teacher for all seasons,
And you have my gratitude!

The Chase

Road going to Mexico from San Diego.
American mythology has us believe that the goal of life is to retire, or that financial freedom means you can now just travel around going from hotel to hotel, lie on beaches and play golf five days a week…
…But that is NOT how achievers are wired.
( Still looking for the author of this article.. credit goes to him )
Let me share with you my own struggle and discovery with this reality:
When I was 28 years old, I sold a company for a very significant sum. I thought I wanted to “retire” or at least take a couple years off. I moved to South Beach, Miami, bought a Harley, and drove up and down the beach every day and spent two or three hours in the gym. It wasn’t three months before I was going stark raving mad. In fact I was in sheer spiritual, emotional and psychological pain. If I were the depressed kind, I would have been in a state of depression, no doubt.
You see we need The Chase…
The Chase is what gives us life, gives us juice. The Chase is our creative spirit getting a chance to be expressed, stretched and realized. The Chase is the means and the end. You can give it different semantics—like pursuit, purpose, mission or vision.
Proverbs warns us about this, “Without vision people perish.”
“Without vision people perish.”
-Proverbs 29:18
It didn’t say, without golf people perish… or without relaxing people perish. NO, it said without vision… without purpose… without the pursuit… or without The Chase, people perish.
We need The Chase
We love The Chase
The Chase is the very verve of life.
Another discovery I made about The Chase through my own evolution is no matter what I am involved with, I am going to be chasing at full throttle. No matter whether I am running a business with hundreds of employees doing tens of millions in revenue or building a simple pet ecommerce business or an online video and photo-sharing business (a couple of companies I invested in and ended up getting involved with at the C-level), I am going to be all consumed by it… no matter the size or seeming importance of the project.
That is just how I am wired. I am always going to be all in on The Chase, no matter what The Chase.
Here are three pieces of advice I want you to take away when understanding The Chase in your own life:
1) Don’t want what you don’t want.
Don’t even make the goal of your life to not be chasing. You will always be chasing, until you’re not, and that is when they pronounce you dead.
In fact if you want to speed that process up, just retire. It is well known that purpose-driven people, whom eventually retire, die shortly thereafter. Why? They lost their life force, their verve for life… and thus found themselves retired permanently.
2) Pick the right Chase.
Because no matter what it is, you will go head deep into it—make sure it something you really want to be chasing day in and day out.

3) Chase for the right reasons.
Are your motivations intrinsic or extrinsic?
This, too, is another mistake I have made in the past. A while back I sat down with a mentor I had at the time and showed him all my big goals and plans for the coming year. I laid it all out and was proud of my thoughtful and detailed strategic plan. He said, “Sure, but where’s your life in that?”
“Huh?” I said. He said, “Yeah, look at it. With all those goals and plans and the schedule this will demand how are you going to fit a life around that?” He said, “Instead why don’t you flip that model. Instead of trying to fit a life around your business goals, first decide what kind of life you want to live, THEN fit your business around that.”
That was HUGE for me. Now when I say a life, I’m not talking about lying on the beach or starting a bridge club. Eighty percent of your life might still be your business, purpose and passion pursuits, but you can still design those to fit the kind of life you want to live.
Meaning, what kind of people do you want to work with? What do you want to be researching, studying and having to talk about all day? Do you want a long commute or a short one? How do you want to have to dress? Do you want it to involve working nights and weekends? Do you want it to involve travel?
You are going to spend 80–90% of your life working… or chasing. You can choose what you work on and chase. Make sure you choose it to FIT the life you want to lead because it will be your life.
So to summarize:
You are going to be chasing. That is how you are wired and what gives you zeal and purpose in life. So sink in and enjoy it. Don’t want what you don’t want. The alternative is death. Death of spirit and eventually death of body.
And since you are going to be chasing, be very conscious about what you are chasing. Choose what you chase carefully because no matter what you end up doing you will become fully consumed by it. Be sure it amplifies your core internal values and has you leading the kind of life that gives you energy, joy and the style of life you want.

Achieving Your Dreams

by Jim Rohn
A Red Ferrari having tires changed. One symbol of
achievement for people who were able to own one.

( As you well know, Jim Rohn is my #1 virtual mentor. It is unfortunate that I never got to meet the man. We are lucky that the people behind www.jimrohn.com continues to share his widom and legacy. This article is one of those that makes you think hard and act to achieve whatever you desire most in your life. Read On. To Your Success! )

While most people spend most of their lives struggling to earn a living, a much smaller number seem to have everything going their way. Instead of just earning a living, the smaller group is busily working at building and enjoying a fortune. Everything just seems to work out for them. And here sits the much larger group, wondering how life can be so unfair, so complicated and unjust. What’s the major difference between the little group with so much and the larger group with so little?

Despite all of the factors that affect our lives—like the kind of parents we have, the schools we attended, the part of the country we grew up in—none has as much potential power for affecting our futures as our ability to dream.

Dreams are a projection of the kind of life you want to lead. Dreams can drive you. Dreams can make you skip over obstacles. When you allow your dreams to pull you, they unleash a creative force that can overpower any obstacle in your path. To unleash this power, though, your dreams must be well defined. A fuzzy future has little pulling power. Well-defined dreams are not fuzzy. Wishes are fuzzy. To really achieve your dreams, to really have your future plans pull you forward, your dreams must be vivid.

If you’ve ever hiked a 14,000-foot peak in the Rocky Mountains, one thought has surely come to mind: “How did the settlers of this country do it?” How did they get from the East Coast to the West Coast? Carrying one day’s supply of food and water is hard enough. Can you imagine hauling all of your worldly goods with you... mile after mile, day after day, month after month? These people had big dreams. They had ambition. They didn’t focus on the hardship of getting up the mountain.

In their minds, they were already on the other side–their bodies just hadn’t gotten them there yet! Despite all of their pains and struggles, all of the births and deaths along the way, those who made it to the other side had a single vision: to reach the land of continuous sunshine and extraordinary wealth. To start over where anything and everything was possible. Their dreams were stronger than the obstacles in their way.

You’ve got to be a dreamer. You’ve got to envision the future. You’ve got to see California while you’re climbing 14,000-foot peaks. You’ve got to see the finish line while you’re running the race. You’ve got to hear the cheers when you’re in the middle of a monster project. And you’ve got to be willing to put yourself through the paces of doing the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. Because that’s how you realize your dreams.

Today is Yesterday’s Tomorrow

Sometimes we are so pre- occupied at thinking about what the future holds we forget that what will bring us there is the moment we are currently in. It is the only partial control that we have of what will be the result or how it will look like. Nobody says it better than Jim Rohm..hope you absorb it and may you arrive at a better tomorrow by reading it. Enjoy!

By Jim Rohn

When the game of life is finally over, there is no second chance to correct our errors. The clock that is ticking away the moments of our lives does not care about winners and losers. It does not care about who succeeds or who fails. It does not care about excuses, fairness or equality. The only essential issue is how we played the game.
-->

Regardless of a person's current age, there is a sense of urgency that should drive them into action now—this very moment. We should be constantly aware of the value of each and every moment of our lives - moments that seem so insignificant that their loss often goes unnoticed.
We still have all the time we need. We still have lots of chances—lots of opportunities, lots of years to show what we can do. For most of us, there will be a tomorrow, a next week, a next month and a next year. But unless we develop a sense of urgency, those brief windows of time will be sadly wasted, as were the weeks and months and years before them. There isn't an endless supply!
So, as you think of your dreams and goals of your future tomorrow, begin today to take those very important first steps to making them
all come to life.

Words to Help You Make Your Millions

by Dan Pena - Pena-isms

1. Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
2. Don't waste time on things you can't change.
3. Business deals start and end with people - the interaction of flesh and blood, bone and sinew, heart and mind, emotion and soul.
4. During Quantum growth, any problem you solve will be replaced immediately by a larger, more complicated problem
5. You won't always have all the answers. Only take seriously the advice of others whom you greatly respect.
6. Plan for success. With no back-up plans, no Plan B's, no ripcords, no fail-safes - OR YOU WILL FAIL!
7. BECOME MORE DISCIPLINED. The pain of discipline hurts less than the pain of regret.
8. If you want to change, first YOU have to change.
9. A man who dwells on his past, robs his future.
10. Business opportunities abound - but formidable barriers exist. And the biggest barrier is psychological. It is YOU!
11. QUANTUM GROWTH ELIMINATES CLEAR SAILING. So you'd better learn to navigate troubled waters.
12. From chaos comes order. In chaos is opportunity. Chaordic!
13. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
14. Your doubts are not the product of accurate thinking, but habitual thinking.
15. Business should not run smoothly while you're taking Quantum Leap. Chaos is normal. The business on quiet waters is still in the barbor.

more to come

The Great Leadership Challenge

The bee at work at a sunflower
in Burnham Park in Baguio City

( I have been through highs and lows in my career. One thing constant though is my belief that I am a leader and a good one at that. I have led from as many as thirty-three engineers at one point and three nationalities at another. I am at a point in my career that I am not exercising much leading as I don't have subordinates reporting under me. Still, the leadership growth is a never ending process ...the only time I will stop being a student is when I have come to the end of my journey on this earth. Let's keep growing! )

If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a person of quality yourself. Leadership is the ability to attract someone to the gifts, skills, and opportunities you offer as an owner, as a manager, as a parent. What’s important in leadership is refining your skills. All great leaders keep working on themselves until they become effective. Here are some specifics:

Learn to be strong but not impolite. It is an extra step you must take to become a powerful, capable leader with a wide range of reach. Some people mistake rudeness for strength. It’s not even a good substitute.

Next, learn to be kind but not weak. We must not mistake weakness for kindness. Kindness isn’t weak. Kindness is a certain type of strength. We must be kind enough to tell someone the truth. We must be kind enough and considerate enough to lay it on the line. We must be kind enough to tell it like it is and not deal in delusion.

Next, learn to be bold but not a bully. It takes boldness to win the day. To build your influence, you’ve got to walk in front of your group. You’ve got to be willing to take the first arrow, tackle the first problem, discover the first sign of trouble. Like the farmer, if you want any rewards at harvest time, you have got to be bold and face the weeds and the rain and the bugs straight on. You’ve got to seize the moment.

Here’s the next step. You’ve got to learn to be humble but not timid. You can’t get to the high life by being timid. Some people mistake timidity for humility. But humility is a virtue; timidity is a disease. It’s an affliction. It can be cured, but it is a problem.

In addition to reading and listening, you also need a chance to do some talking and sharing. I have some people in my life who help me with important life questions, who assist me in refining my own philosophy, weighing my values and pondering questions about success and lifestyle.
Humility is almost a God-like word. A sense of awe. A sense of wonder. An awareness of the human soul and spirit. An understanding that there is something unique about the human drama versus the rest of life. Humility is a grasp of the distance between us and the stars, yet having the feeling that we’re part of the stars.

Here’s a good tip: Learn to be proud but not arrogant. It takes pride to build your ambitions. It takes pride in your community. It takes pride in a cause, in accomplishment. But the key to becoming a good leader is to be proud without being arrogant.

Do you know the worst kind of arrogance? Arrogance from ignorance. It’s intolerable. If someone is smart and arrogant, we can tolerate that. But if someone is ignorant and arrogant, that’s just too much to take.

The next step is learning to develop humor without folly. In leadership, we learn that it’s okay to be witty but not silly; fun but not foolish.

Next, deal in realities. Deal in truth. Save yourself the agony of delusion. Just accept life as it is. Life is unique. The whole drama of life is unique. It’s fascinating.

Life is unique. Leadership is unique. The skills that work well for one leader may not work at all for another. However, the fundamental skills of leadership can be adopted to work well for just about everyone: at work, in the community, and at home.

To Your Success! See you at the finish line my friend =)

Overcoming the Fear of Rejection

by Denis Waitley
( This one concerns a lot of people specially those in Network Marketing. A lot of beginning network marketers after a very aggressive and confident start suddenly falters when they start encountering those "Rejections". Who wants to be Rejected? The key is knowing exactly what is being rejected ...read on ...Enjoy! )

To conquer your fear of rejection, you need to handle the word “no” in a constructive way. When people turn you down after a presentation, you have to interpret the “no” as “no, this is not right for me now.” We also can interpret “no” as meaning, “I need to know more about this opportunity or the products before I can say yes.”

I look at the service I offer to others as a gift that almost everyone desires. It’s like a nutritious dessert. What if waiters or waitresses in a restaurant said to customers at their tables: “Would you like our special strawberry parfait for dessert? It’s the best in the world!” And they were told “no” by their patrons, three out of five times.

Would they go to their manager, throw up their hands and quit, lamenting, “They don’t like me or my strawberry parfait”? Of course they wouldn’t. They’d go on about their business, thinking the patrons had missed out on something delicious.

That’s why I treat products as a gift, much more nutritious and beneficial than a fruit dessert. But what is being rejected is the presentation, not the presenter. When I can separate my self-esteem from offering the products or business opportunity, I can live with rejection and look for ways to get a positive response more often.

When you experience rejection, that’s the time to network with mentors and role models. It’s also the time to listen to upbeat music and read articles like this, to attend meetings and conference calls, and to hang around with optimists and winners.

There are basically four things we do in selling our products and services, and only four. We use the products and services ourselves, we talk to people about the products and services, we talk to people about the financial benefits we offer, and we coach them to refer us to others who do the same thing. First, we are coachable and willing to learn something new every day. Then, we become coaches. All you really need to move up to the next level is have faith in yourself.

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk involvement.
To expose your feelings is to risk revealing your true self.
To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk rejection.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.

But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing at all. People who will risk nothing do nothing, have nothing, and become nothing. They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love or live. Chained by their certitudes, they are trapped.

They have forfeited their freedom. Only a person who risks is truly free. And one last idea you can live and believe: the more you give, the more you’ll receive.
