10 Lessons we can learn when undergoing Medical or Annual Physical Exams.

Most of us here have undergone medical or annual physical exam at least more than once in their working careers. This activity is a requirement before any of us join a company or get cleared to go abroad to become an OFW . It is also a benefit provided by the companies to their employees to ensure their health is regularly check to ensure their wellbeing.

I probably have gone around 21 times on these Medical or Annual Physical exams in my 24 years of working experience and in my early attempts to join the workforce back in 1991.

1.      Don’t wear worn out underwear or you might reveal what is more than necessary

No underwear – w/ underwear but with loose garter

Lesson:   Sometimes you have to let go of old stuff or even clothes that are already worn out and spend some amount of money replacing them. It will cost you more in maintaining or using them in the long run.

2.      Understand what the Doctor’s feel during your medical check-up.

First bend over rectal check-up – look at it at home to see what the female doctor saw.

Lesson:   Part of growing up and becoming better person is understanding what other people feels and think on a given conflict or issue.  Think of how you will feel when you are on their shoes or the one looking at your behind during those physical exams.

3.      If you don’t have a Stool sample container, by all means find a way to grab one.

Guy with no Stool Sample Container – brings one on a big Lady’s Choice sandwich spread jar.

Lesson:  Not all resources in Life is available to us in order to achieve our goals and objectives. With grit and determination we can fill in those lacking resources and make us unstoppable in whatever we want to achieve in life. Countless of personalities have shown this  … Pacquaio, Jordan , Gokongwei ,  like that guy w/o that jar we too can still provide that stool sample needed.

4.      Don’t let the Doctor take a call while doing your Rectal Exam.

Friend on rectal exam – Doctor takes call – another person comes in the room

Lesson:  Multitasking is good but nothing beats a serial activity with a lot of focus and concentration put into it.  Worklife balance or juggling your different roles are critical to make sure nobody or less surprising events comes into your life with your pants down.

5.      Clean your ear canals or ask the doctor to speak clearly or you might not do what he/she asks you to do.

Hawak sa pisngi
Ubo instead of upo

Lesson:  Communication is very important in having your point or message come across. It helps to speed up resolving issues and preventing any misunderstanding.

6.      Make those bladder almost full and learn how to hold it for a little while.

75% full before doing the Prostate Ultrasound – drink more water – then run to the CR

Lesson:  Learn to delay gratification.  Not being able to wait will lead you to having the best thing or you’ll end up only with the next best thing. Like growing your wealth … you can spend it all now or be a problem to your kids later in life because you were not able to prepare anything for your retirement age.

7.       Check if you have two balls in the sack.

Check if you have undescended balls or hernia … 2 balls are better than one.

Lesson:  Self- awareness and examination. Take stock of what you have and be grateful of what you already enjoy which still might be a dream for other people.

8.      Be nice to the anesthesiologist and the nurses.

Inject anesthesia – look at their beautiful faces – woke up it is done.

Lesson:  Respect all people especially those who have nothing to lose. Anytime in your life you can be at their mercy.

9.      If they can’t locate the vein on your left arm, allow them to check it on your right arm.

Difficult to locate for blood test sample. …switch arm …switch phlebotomist

Lesson:  Have several options and be patient with people. Allow failures to happen. Allow those ideas to percolate and have perseverance to see them through into fruition… eventually you’ll find those veins and have a successful sample blood extraction.

10.  Do not memorize the Letters on the Eye Chart

Looking at different levels or grade … said Print by …

Lesson:  Do not pretend you know everything. Ask for help. Don’t be a cheat . If you don’t sooner or later people will find out or on a higher level ,

What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?   NIV Mathew 16:26

Still have more of these lessons we can derive when undergoing Medical or Annual Physical Exams. Learn to laugh at yourself whenever some of those slip ups do happen. Make sure to follow the Doctors advice whatever the results will be.  Be thankful to be alive and look forward to your next medical and Physical exam.

God Bless Us all. Thank You.

Lance Miguel's Challenge Speech

Lance delivered this speech masterfully last April 2, 2016 at SLCS.

To our guest of honor, to our Principal Teacher Ritchie, to our school officials, distinguished guests, dedicated teachers, beloved parents and fellow graduates, a pleasant afternoon to all!

We are all gathered here today to recognize the efforts, sacrifices, and all the hard work we made this school year. The wonderful and challenging times we spent here in SLCS will always be cherished even when we are already outside the walls of this great institution.

There have been several speeches delivered during graduation by the class valedictorians and the salutatorians. Mostly they talk about being successful in life and the bright future of each student. It is a challenge for me to share something more meaningful and inspiring that will be useful to us all.

We all want to win, right? We all want to have perfect scores in our exams. Make the right answers on Quiz Bee questions. On anything that we do, we always want to come on top. We don’t want to lose. Losing is equated to being a failure, who wants to be called a failure or a loser. Nobody. But here lies the problem, we don’t always have the right answers, we are not always the brightest, the strongest on a particular subject or area… losing, making mistakes, or failing is surely inevitable.

Are we going to play it safe? Or are we not going to try at all? Don’t make challenging goals for ourselves. Lower our expectations so we will not get hurt should we not receive the recognition we think we duly deserve. My answer to this is definitely NO. We should put higher expectations of ourselves and be not afraid to make mistakes. A lot of famous people did not get to where they are without failures and mistakes.

There are 3 things we can learn from famous people who encountered failures and made mistakes before becoming successful on their field:

1.   There will be times when you fail.

Sometimes physical handicap or lack of abilities cause us to fail. Sometimes it is lack of preparation or maybe even overconfidence. Regardless of the reason, we all at times fail and encounter disappointment and setbacks in life.

2.   Mistakes must Not be avoided.

A lot of people avoid making mistakes since they feel it is a sign of failure or weakness.

But mistakes can become learning experience. Fear of making mistakes has kept many people from rising to the top. If Michael Jordan who is considered one of the best basketball player of all time, stopped pursuing his love of basketball when he did not see his name on the list, if he did not try to improve his performance while he is not yet meeting the height requirement, then we would have not known of his genius and eventual greatness in the game of basketball.

3.   Embrace change.

Only thru change can there be true growth. But why do people resist change? Change is uncomfortable, consumes a lot of energy, and people fear negative impact of doing those changes. Winners and successful people did not become who they are when they are finally recognized. They became what they are when they acknowledged their mistakes and weaknesses and embraced the need to change. To improve once performance and change their attitude that is when people started to grow. We grow only when we change.

So again what do we need to learn from our mistakes and overcome failures:

1. There will be times when you fail.
2. Mistakes must not be avoided.
3. Embrace Change

Thanks to all my teachers and classmates for helping me in correcting the mistakes I committed and being part of my journey. Without you guys, I wouldn’t be here this evening speaking to everyone. To my friends, my batchmates, and classmates, thank you for everything. Congratulations to all of usl!

Next school year will bring us to another stage in our lives, I challenge you all to always keep dreaming big and don’t fear committing mistakes. Take the learnings graciously given us here at SLCS, I am confident that someday we’ll be the leaders in our society and good Christian people of the future.

Firstly I would like to thank God, for all the talents and blessings he bestowed on me, for all what I have comes from Him. I return all the glory to God for my achievements. I also would like to thank my parents, Mommy and Daddy for being my biggest supporters and inspiration in my life. My Ate Che and Kuya Tristan who came before me here at SLCS and helped paved the way for me to adapt and meet school requirements with their help and advices. To my Tita Phoebe who always push and encourage me to be my best at school.

Thank you and once again, good afternoon!
